October Cyber Security Month Kicked Off

- News

On 3 October 2022, the European Cyber Security Week in the Netherlands kicked off with the launch of the annual Alert Online awareness campaign. In this campaign public-private partners such as the national government, municipalities, businesses, police and knowledge institutions participate and organise events to create cybersecurity awareness. During the kick-off event, a panel discussion took place and the results of the annual cybersecurity awareness survey ‘secure online’ were presented by Melle Conradie. The research was commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate (EZK).

The key findings from the survey

  • Knowledge about online risks is estimated to be similar to 2021 and 2020. Almost three quarters of the Dutch people consider their own knowledge reasonable to good.
  • Phishing remains the most commonly experienced form of cybercrime. A third (32%) have experienced this themselves.
  • As in 2021, help request fraud (13%) and malware (11%) complete the top three. Hacking (11%) follows shortly behind.
  • Helpline fraud (13%) and hacking (11%) are mentioned more often than last year. These same three forms are also mentioned most often when asked what people think they might have to deal with.
